Selected Genetics
We believe there should be more to choosing a tree than simply knowing its species. Whenever possible, Fast Mast Trees seeks plant material with identifiable genetics, known parentage, documented origin, published research, or demonstrated traits that make it particularly useful for wildlife or productive landscapes.
Not every tree will have the same level of documentation, but our goal is to provide customers with as much useful information about the plant's origin and expected performance as we can.
Performance Matters
A tree is only valuable if it performs well for the job it was planted to do. Fast Mast Trees looks beyond species name and considers the traits that matter most to landowners: how quickly a tree begins producing mast, how much and when it produces, how well it adapts to Midwestern conditions, and how it responds to disease, pests, drought, flooding, and other stresses.
We are also interested in how each tree fits into the landscape. For some customers, that means producing dependable food for deer, turkey, waterfowl, and other wildlife. For others, it may mean commercial nut production, silvopasture, livestock forage, or another productive agroforestry system.
Not every species or cultivar excels in every category. Our goal is to understand those differences and help customers choose plants based on the performance traits that matter most for their property and objectives.
Documenting Performance Over Time
Trees are long-term investments, and their real value becomes clearer over years rather than weeks or months. Fast Mast Trees intends to build an ongoing field record for the major species and cultivars we grow and sell.
As our evaluation plantings mature, we plan to document establishment, annual growth, seasonal development, flowering, first mast production, mast timing, crop performance, tree health, pest and disease observations, and responses to weather and site conditions. Photos and video will allow customers to see how individual trees change from season to season and year to year.
Over time, these observations will become evolving field reports attached to individual species and cultivar pages. Rather than a static nursery description, customers will be able to follow the history of a tree and learn how it has actually performed under Midwestern growing conditions.
Fast Mast Trees field observations will be clearly distinguished from published university research and other outside sources. Our goal is not to replace formal research, but to combine the best available research with transparent, practical observations from trees growing in the field.
